Transform the rusted, chipped display cooler bases into an art gallery showcasing work by local children, neighborhood artists, and shoppers.

Why

As part of my Haile Foundation Apprenticeship, I explored the question: “How do we preserve the soul of Cincinnati’s growing Findlay Market neighborhood?” Cooler Cooler became a smaller activation within that larger research.

When we asked lifelong neighbors and shoppers about their favorite memories of Findlay Market, nearly every answer traced back to childhood. The strongest connections weren’t necessarily profound, but they were joyful — simple, formative experiences as kids.

During research, we also discovered another problem: the bottoms of the market’s display coolers, often rusted and worn from condensation. Adults rarely noticed, but for children — whose eye level sat right at those coolers — this view defined their experience of the market.

Artist Prompt

Theme: Connection & Belonging

We invite you to create artwork you’d be proud to see displayed in your own community. If you’d like inspiration, consider exploring ideas of connection, togetherness, or what it means to belong. But you’re not required to follow this theme — you’re free to choose any subject or style that feels meaningful to you.

Think of this project as an opportunity to make something you’d be proud to hang on your fridge — playful, heartfelt, and uniquely yours.

Audience:
The artwork will be displayed on the lower part of market’s display coolers. While all Findlay Market shoppers will enjoy it, the placement is designed to be right at eye level for children — making your work part of the memories they’ll carry with them as they grow.

Outcome

More than 300 feet of artwork replaced rust with vibrancy, creating a shopping experience that was both welcoming and memorable for kids. The project fostered stronger connections between vendors, families, and artists, and gave neighborhood children a visible sense of belonging at Findlay Market.
